開催方法:オンライン(Zoom)
講演タイトル:
What Doesn’t Kill you Makes You Stronger: Positive Changes Amidst Adversity
抄録:
The literature is loaded with constructs with similar connotations depicting positive adjustment amidst adversity, including resilience, stress-related growth, posttraumatic growth, and benefit-finding. I will highlight the intricate differences among these constructs and point out the conceptual problems, where appropriate. Subsequently, using my own studies as an example, I will highlight how benefit-finding (i.e., could be enhanced in an intervention program for dementia caregivers in Hong Kong, as well as effects of the intervention on reducing depression and global burden. Interestingly, an innovative mediation analytic method showed that the improvement in benefit-finding of the intervention group was not responsible for the relief of depression and burden. Rather, it was self-efficacy in controlling upsetting thoughts (but not other self-efficacy beliefs), a secondary outcome, that mediated the treatment effects on depression. The implications for understanding the ‘benefits’ of benefit-finding will be discussed.
