Title: Promoting selective trust in young children: From lab to field

Children need to acquire information from others, while also being
cautious about blindly trusting everyone.
While studies have found that young children exhibit a certain level of
selective trust in both lab and real-world settings, they still
encounter significant difficulties in rejecting others’ suggestions and
resisting being lured away.
I will discuss about three studies which tested different approaches
to solve this problem. In Study 1 and Study 2, we investigated whether
a novel strategic training and various executive functioning training could
enhance epistemic vigilance in 3-year-olds. Study 3 examined the
effectiveness of theory-of-mind training in improving children’s resistance
to being lured away by a stranger in a simulated-risk paradigm.
The findings have theoretical implications about how children make
decisions about whom to trust, as well as real-world implications for
keeping children vigilant and safe.
